peculiarfish@texjer thanks for the kind words! Yeah, we know the value of Subfolio to us, but we are trying to discover the value of it for others by seeing how folks use it. texjer@yottoy@peculiarfish Why didn't I think of Subfolio, that's perfect! I forwarded your eblast to everybody I know in New York. I still haven't integrated it on my own site but I really like what you guys are doing with that. I also like the way that you're engaging the community. I think someday, because of systems like yours, everybody will have portfolios, everybody will make art or design, or something. Added 2010-03-31 11:01:55.
texjer@yottoy You can do that with Cargo through tagging each project the designer, designer-name, collection, then create links for each of those. I think it's easy but if you don't know css and html too well, it might take you a few days. Added 2010-03-30 14:07:44.

yottoyneed some help over here. I'm looking for a CMS for an fashion agency that will present different designers and different collections for every designer. meaning I'll need to (very) easily create several levels in the menu (Designers > Designer-Names > Collections). I don't really need any fancy features besides that (if it was possible to do so on Indexhibit it would easily be enough). what do you suggest I use? Added 2010-03-30 04:42:22.

peculiarfish@stoavio You got it right about subfolio! Its really just a simple tool to get things on the web fast. We've been using it for our client studio for 5 years. We have it set up with webdav on all our employees computers, so its like a local folder. Then when designers save out their designs, they save directly to this folder and the work is automatically online for our clients to see. Also project managers use it to deliver documents and internally we have a secure one for all our contracts.
We think of it as a "dumping ground" ... for example, we just "dumped" all our design work over 10 years at http://portfolio.area17.com and had them online in minutes. I personally use it for sharing baby photos with my mom :)
Subfolio can also be used as a portfolio website, we used to use it as our primary website. But this is definitely secondary as it doesn't have a simple CMS interface like Cargo (which we love). We may add one in the future, but for now our goal is to keep it a simple and streamlined tool that is 100% configurable. The idea behind it is "coded design behavior" (eg. configure it once, then "start dumping"). I guess you have to release your inner geek to truly appreciate this app.

mikrokosmonautWordPress works for me. The predominant objection with WP seems to be "it has too many features" which to me seems a bit short sighted. You can opt to remove most of WPs core features fairly quickly with CSS or by playing with the template files, and then you always have the option to switch them back on in the future. (For instance you might not want people to be able to leave comments on your work, but in a few years time, you might change your mind). Added 2009-10-25 14:05:23.

@unttld I agree, though you'd be amazed at how many designers workflows involve FTP (which they're highly comfortable with). I've demo'd WordPress to prospective customers and they've asked if they could just use Transmit, et al instead.
@grafician Outside of the social elements, I'd definitely recommend Indexhibit (for it's participants list) and Core (for it's Cargo-esque themes).

unttld@LeslieOA Stacey is a good app. I enjoy it quite a bit. I just find the flat file structure not suitable for using for client work, or even for artist friends who aren't computer savvy. I think rolling our own CMS' is based on our own needs not being met with what's on the market (whether that's some functional issue or an aesthetic issue, or maybe some of us just need to build stuff).
I'd be happy having a website running each of these CMS' cause they're all pretty damn good.
@kbpeterson Django is great, but finding decently priced hosting for it is not so great. My Django fallback is CI. Than the current RoR. I'm looking forward to the next Rails release when they mash in Merb. That said, I hate PHP. It's a dirty barbarian language. :D Added 2009-10-18 10:42:35.

LeslieOA@grafician@suprb The current trend does seem to be design/developers rolling their own CMS' (I'm no different). I understand the logic behind not starting from scratch/re-inventing the wheel, but sometimes you just need that personal touch I guess.
@suprb Out of curiosity, what does 'DOS-2' stand for? I'm guessing "Design/Disk Operating System". @grafician Definitely give the other download+install CMS' mentioned above a try (haven't tested Berta or Stacey as of yet). Added 2009-10-17 02:24:06.

graficianRight now I'm using Cargo - http://grafician.launchnext.com/ as the main portfolio engine, also flickr for my experiments and pics - http://www.flickr.com/photos/grafician/ and used Indxr as my WIP/client interface (but I can't use Indxr anymore, because I can't login into the system, getting a "page not found" message when trying to access the login page).
But I want to switch to a "Download&Install" solution because I want to have complete control on what I host, probably going on Core, while I code my own portfolio from scratch.
If you are a busy designer, using a hosted solution works better (ex: Cargo or Krop Pro), but if you have the time, start coding your own portfolio :) Added 2009-10-16 19:50:30.

Then there's the issue of the player. I want it hosted because vimeo and youtube are cluttered. Flowplayer's the cleanest free thing i've found, but I'm cutting off the bottom with a hidden overflow. Is there a cleaner player out there? @suprb ? ;) I've heard that if you pay for vimeo, you can clean it up -- does anybody have an example of that?
@ANSQERON
@3stripe
I'd rather host the content myself, Here's site: http://www.joeygrimm.com/

I would just want to suggest that you should keep it simple. Also, use eye-pleasing colours :)

Peace.

@suprb Could the above be used as a way of notifying everyone in a conversation? Just a thought (unless some wiseguy takes this username).
@Whiteface I didn't even consider a list for simple to use CMS' (with a nice aesthetic).
@kakal The Magic Fields CMS plugin for WordPress @3stripe suggested may help you along the way (also, consider Possible Triangle's WordPress theme edition to get you started: - http://wp.possibletriangle.org/
@3stripe I'd only ever seen Flutter http://flutter.freshout.us/. Good find :-)
@texjer I agree, especially with these sites with great work. I'm torn between
1. XHTML/CSS static portfolio
2. Any of the above CMS'
3. Rolling my own CMS'/web app
I love hacking and design, and even though a lot of what I've used previously works wonders, I always have a niggling feeling that I could and should do things differently (not necessarily better, haha).

Berta and Stacey are nice, but to limited. I would like a solution like Cargo, but to host it on my own server.

But I want to switch to a "Download&Install" solution because I want to have complete control on what I host, probably going on Core, while I code my own portfolio from scratch.
If you are a busy designer, using a hosted solution works better (ex: Cargo or Krop Pro), but if you have the time, start coding your own portfolio :)

Now you mention it, it reads more like an article then a discussion topic, haha.
Your thoughts on the above would be welcome though.
@suprb Is DOS-2 a contender or more CMS for client work? I'm starting from scratch for my future portfolio, but imagine CodeIgnigter/ExpressionEngine is good foundation for these things.
